Sol LEWITT, Serial project no.1 (ABCD) : Formal variation using procedural modeling

Ayman Ghazali

Based on the analysis of Sol Lewit’s Serial project no.1, this work explores systems of autonomous compositions in the space of a 10 cm cube. The idea behind this exercise is to investigate issues of formal analysis and systemic composition in architecture as well as computer programming, graphic representation and 3D printing.

Sol Lewitt (1928-2007) is an American artist, considered as the man behind the fundamental ideas of Conceptual Art. According to him, the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work. It becomes some sort of machine that makes the art, initiating a process that obeys certain rules, and determines the final form by playing itself out. It’s all about setting up a generative idea and making it work in all its possibilities of variation.
