Architecture is an ever-present form of visual storytelling. The built environment has the ability to capture the history of a place and tell that story through space. It also forms a visual, spatial link between the past, present, and future, becoming a point in the timeline of a place and culture. The OASIS-TALE cultural center sums up the intent of the project to capture the essence of the Oasis through a narrative approach. The main aim was to create a building that signifies and embodies the Oasien heritage of Figuig within a modern-day building. In this project, we have tried to create a peaceful gathering place, a place where the people of Figuig can be connected to their future and their past, their roots and their branches. It is a narrative promenade through figuig narrow alleys with natural light staging and scenography inviting the visitor’s imagination to discover Figuig marvelous tales.

The user accesses the building by a chicane entrance and an appealing facade that captures his attention and curiosity. The facade pays tribute to the Oasien heritage of Figuig by highlighting the names of Ksour, mountains, water sources and wadis brought to life through light and shade. Walking down a few steps to the left the visitor enters tree connecting exhibition spaces where the visitor is invited to follow a path to discover local art and handicraft. When stepping out of the exhibition rooms, there is an open arena, a central patio that highlights the Oasis Trilogy WATER - PALM GROVE - CLAY. Through the open arena, we can access the lower level featuring a narrow entrance for added mystery. The space stages a jungle of natural light which represents the real-life experience of the Oasis. The position of the theatre, enhanced by the adjacent empty space surrounded by one of the gardens, creates an additional viewing area for overcrowded performances. The opening of the folding wall aims to create a visual and spatial link between the project and the French residence.

Plans of the project

Finally, the OASIS-TALE cultural center has been designed to become a symbol of Figuig offering spaces where history, tales and traditions meet innovations, ideas and creations.
